Web Hosting with Bravenet

Posted by the dood on Thursday, August 9th, 2007

A little bit of unpaid promotion for a company called Bravenet. They are a local hosting provider that provides hosting internationally and does most of their business in the US.

They do web hosting and web tools for webmasters to improve their site. A great control panel interface superior to that of move hosting providers and prefab ones such as hsphere and cpanel. Take a look if you can:

Different Direction for my Blog

Posted by the dood on Friday, August 3rd, 2007

I’m losing interest in blogging only about audio and hi-fi… there are so many other topics that I’d like to discuss… such as ways to eat healthy and lose weight that worked for me and ways to save on grocery food bills and all these wonderful things such as my experience in relationships and what kind of advice I can offer you guys.. not that I am any qualified, but I feel that I do have a unique view on life and sometimes, just sometimes.. something I say might come in handy or help someone in some way.

I plan to post little tidbits of information here that might be of interest to people. Hopefully it increases the readership and appreciation of this blog.

MacOS on my iMac.. Not as stable as I thought

Posted by the dood on Friday, August 3rd, 2007

My MacOS “crashes” every once in a while, and I’m not quite sure why. I get this garbled screen of death, which cannot be recovered from except when I push the power button, then the screen goes away and its back to normal.

Here’s a screen cap of the screen… oddly, Mac’s screen cap feature works just fine when its giving me the static garble that it usually does… so take a look:

Mac Garble

Other problems I have are with the Mac built-in Calculator widget… not the problems with the Calculator app that’s in the applications, but the one in the dashboard… I suppose you can argue that its not part of the Mac, but poor programming, but it was packaged with it. I don’t completely buy this whole ad campaign that Mac has going against PC, about how the PCs are so much more confusing to use, etc etc. As I type this on a Mac, I must say I like using my PC better still. It has less problems with it, at least when it’s set up properly.

DIY Black Hole Pre-amp/Headphone Amp

Posted by the dood on Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

I’ve been working on a new preamp/headamp that I’ve dubbed the blackhole preamp. It will use some really neat parts including BUF627 and a tons of capacitance. This little headamp should outdo anything out there in the $3000 range in my humble opinion.

Look for the write-up soon!

DIY Hi-Fi Vibration Dampers – Kind Of…

Posted by the dood on Sunday, July 29th, 2007

Ever wonder why hi-fi audio vibration dampers cost so much darn money? Yeah… me too. $250 or more for a chunk of magical meteoric material that will make your audio system sound whole again! Well.. there is something to be said for properly damping the vibrations in your stereo system, but putting an overpriced paperweight on top of your CD Player might not be the best way to go about it. Sure, it might look nice and give everyone around you (well, the other audiophiles at least) penis envy, but won’t it be nice when you have a few extra thousand in your pocket for a nice dinner and a new case of Redbook CDs?

Well.. i have a solution for you guys… guys like me that like to try and run everything on the cheap, and guys that are tired of spending hundreds if not thousands for tweaks that could cost you less than $20. There are some companies out there selling these chinese-made dampers (which are really made for another purpose) for the bargain price of $25 or so… but you can probably pick these up at Jysk or any type of home-outfitter place like Ikea possibly for under $8 each.

Check them out:
Vibration Dampening

That’s two of them on top of my Gershman Acoustics X-1’s. Not bad looking, and not too pricey for $7.99 each! Worth a try? Definately. It seems to do different things atop different units. I have stopped using them on my speakers as it dampens them too much, but work well on top of my CD Player and Preamp.

Give it a try.. keep an eye out for them at home shops, they are sold as “door stoppers” but they’re really DIY vibration dampening in disguise!
