Just saw this on the Vancouver Sun this morning. Apparently a few of the restaurants out there using cheaper fish alternatives have been busted. I know it’s pretty common out there, as I’ve heard of many restaurants using pork and selling it as Veal, and using catfish instead of Cod, but this time it’s public, and these restaurants are going to have a tough time explaining it to customers. More than a quarter of 21 samples examined were fraudulent to some degree. Four were restaurants and two were fish fillets from T&T Supermarket… ever wonder why their Snapper and Rock Cod fillets were so cheap? They are technically a similar species of fish however, not a blatant misrepresentation.
Common fish swaps include:
Wild Salmon that’s really Farmed Salmon
Red Sanpper that’s really Tilapia
Crab that’s really Hake
Flounder as Halibut
Pollock as Cod
Restaurants Busted:
Coney Island Seafood on Marine Drive
Speeds Pub in Ladner
Takumi Japanese Restaurant in West Vancouver
Bon Sushi in Surrey
It’s a shame that there is so much fraud going on in day to day lives, when you go out to try and enjoy a nice cod fish and chips you might get catfish and chips… halibut sashimi turns out to be flounder sashimi.

Well, not really.. but maybe. Either way, a significant amount of Gold and Silver has gone missing from the Canadian Mint, or someone made a gross miscalculation when they weighed it last.

The Canadian mint is now conducting an external audit of all financial records to determine the reason for the discrepancy. The mint is no stranger to theft… the largest recorded theft from the mint according to Vancouver Sun was in 1996 when a worker at the plant pocketed 85 ounces of pure gold, and sold it for $8000. In today’s market, that amount of gold would be worth approximately $82,000US.

Is it? I sure hope not. I am getting old enough now that I am seeing style trends recycle themselves, and that’s a blow to my ego… however, this is one style trend that I don’t think should EVER come back… Neon! It was all the rage in the 80’s with Neon Surfwear and Skiwear, and now Maui and Sons threatens to bring back the craze with their new line of clothing.

Revolve is carrying it, and generally they have good taste, but the Neon I cannot condone, even if you’re a hipster!

Well, another reason for me to HATE APPLE. See.. for about 3-4 months, I’ve been blaming my PC and network connection issues with TCP/IP and doing all sorts of things to try and fix the network problems I have been having.
Basically my problem was this: Any sort of FTP or HTTP Browser window or connection attempt that was made would fail 50% of the time. So I would open FTP and try to connect and it would fail. Internet Explorer was the same way. Every once in a while when I opened a new Explorer Window (Not Tab) it would just not work, and I would have to open another one. This was fine with IE7 because each tab is the same process and does not open a new TCP/IP Connection. IE8 runs each tab separately to insulate other tabs from crashes which also means that every tab I open has a 50% chance of the connection failing… a bit problematic when you are doing a lot of browsing.
So.. after weeks of searching on and off for the answer, I finally started noticing that there was this nDNSResponder.exe that was taking up a few ports and decided to check out what it is… Bonjour for Windows… made by APPLE. Perhaps an attempt by Steve Jobs to piss off a few PC Users, or the typically buggy update that Apple releases.. oh yes, Apple releases tons of buggy updates. Much more than Microsoft IMO. I close iTunes and BAM!!! Problem solved! Unfortunately, now with Bonjour deactivated, my itunes will not load. Also a bit problematic as I need itunes to update my iPod. Well.. I think I might just have to competely boycott Apple now as they are a peice of shit company that puts out software that screws everyone’s shit up.
